There is a place in the woods where love grows tall. It’s so tall, in fact, that it almost touches a great, expansive sky.

I love shooting there.

It’s called Lake Crescent Lodge, and it’s part of a very majestic part of our nation named The Olympic Peninsula. Turns out, our world is a very small place. And it was through a chain of several, related little incidents that the Phillip family called upon me for Jess & Daniel’s Destination Wedding.

I arrived the day before the ceremony, a little weary for the wear. The night before I’d just shot another wedding in Houston (my home town). But it never fails that I step off that plane near Seattle, take in a deep breath, and feel my senses renew. Destination Weddings are always a way to see the world a little different – even more so than I try to do on the regular. A few hour’s drive over bridges and mountains I found myself back in my favorite part of the country – my second home – The Pacific Northwest. There, by the edge of Lake Crescent, a little crowd began to collect for a wedding rehearsal.

Smiles and laughter echoed in the air. Children played. So did adults. The energy of a wedding is always building, like bubbling in a corked bottle.

Jess and Daniel stole their little moments in between the bustle and I began to get a sense of what their love looked like.

Everyone worked to practice for the wedding ceremony. Amazingly, the littles were super committed to their roles.

As the day wore on, we settled in for dinner. And I was taken in as family. Into the fold I went, absorbing their stories and hugs. These folks have stolen a little piece of my heart. I couldn’t tear myself away and soon found that the light had gone.

After nightfall, I was invited to the shores of the lake for friendship and s’mores. The men lit the fire, and in the darkness we huddled awaiting the growth of flames.

A Blood Moon greeted us that night, making it’s way over the mountain. I only caught a tiny bit of it after the eclipsed had passed. But it reminded me of the fleeting nature of life. The importance of cherished moments and of seeing the little details as much as we can.
